BEACH VOLLEYBALL REFEREES’ WORKSHOP LAUNCHED AT NEGOMBO BEACH Negombo Beach hosted the opening of a national Beach Volleyball Referees’ Workshop, organised by the Beach Volleyball Commission of Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation, bringing together beach volleyball referees from across the country. The workshop is designed to strengthen referees’ theoretical understanding and practical officiating skills, in line with international beach volleyball standards. Classroom sessions and on-court practical training will guide officials on modern rules, match control, and game management. Highlighting Sri Lanka’s identity as an island nation, organisers emphasised that beach volleyball is a natural and high-potential sport for the country, both at a competitive level—aiming for international medals—and as an adventure sport with strong tourism and commercial value. This programme marks the beginning of a regular referee development initiative, ensuring continuous improvement and long-term growth. As part of its future vision, the Commission plans to establish officially registered beach volleyball coaches’ and referees’ squads, enabling organisations and event organisers to access qualified officials through the Beach Volleyball Commission. The event was made possible with the strong support of the Negombo Tourist Association, the principal sponsor of the workshop. Special appreciation was extended to Mr. Warnakumara, Chairman of the Negombo Tourist Association, for his leadership and commitment in helping bring this initiative to live. The certificate awarding ceremony was graced by the Secretary of the Beach Volleyball Commission, Commander Madushan Silva, the Chairman of the Negombo Tourist Association, along with distinguished dignitaries from the Sri Lanka Police and other invited officials from the volleyball fraternity. The workshop continued over the last two days, marking an important step in elevating beach volleyball officiating and promoting the sport across Sri Lanka
